In 2014, the Perth Mint teamed up with former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti for a series of designs on the new Wedge Tail Eagle coin series. The Perth Mint has, typically, offered a new design in the series every other year.

The 2014 and 2015 coins shared a design, and these 2016 coins offered a new design for the first time in the series and it was shared the following year on the 2017 release. On the obverse of 2016 1/10 oz Australian Gold Wedge Tail Eagle Coins is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
