The Perth Mint introduced in 1996 the Australian Lunar Gold Series. This was started with the Year of the Rat in 1996 and then each subsequent year, a new design was released featuring each of the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese Zodiac. The last release of this Lunar Series was the Pig in 2007. The coins were very popular and this lead the Perth Mint to release a second Lunar Gold Series (Lunar Series II) in 2008, after the first Lunar Series (Lunar Series I) was completed.

The Coins were originally available in weights of 1 OZ, 1/4 OZ, 1/10 OZ and 1/20 OZ in bullion format, and a three coin proof set in numismatic format. With the success of this series the bullion offerings as well as the numismatic offerings were extended to include many other weights, proofs and colored versions. The Lunar Series Coins have been subject to specific maximum mintages, thus making them in more demand and creating a premium for many of those coins. For sale is a 2000 Australia Year of the Dragon one OZ Gold Coin graded by PCGS as MS69. This is the fifth coin in this series and is the most popular and most desired lunar gold, with full mintage of 30,000.
