The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2020 Double Dragon 1oz Gold Coin. Struck from 99.99% pure gold, the coin's reverse portrays two dragons chasing a single flaming pearl, a metaphor for wisdom and enlightenment, against a background of stylised clouds. Celebrated in classical Chinese art, the double dragon motif represents longevity, good fortune and auspiciousness, and is often featured in traditional New Year dragon dances.
The Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, 2020 year-date and the weight and fineness are depicted on the coin's obverse. This coin includes an authentication feature on the reverse in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. This letter is only detectable under a magnifying glass.
Each gold bullion coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule. Established on 20 June 1899, two years before Australia's Federation in 1901, The Perth Mint was the last of three Australian colonial branches of the United Kingdom's Royal Mint (after the now-defunct Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint) intended to refine gold from the gold rushes and to mint gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns for the British Empire.
