The wedge-tailed eagle can be found from sea level areas to alpine regions, though they favour forested land and open country, to rainforests and coastal heaths. They can often be seen perched in trees and on rocks and cliffs, from where they have a clear view of their surroundings, enabling them to defend their territory and identify prey. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1 kilo of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
